Description

This fascinating volume presents a very British perspective on major historical, political, and cultural events in 1763. A general history of Europe is accompanied by literary reviews, studies of natural history, poetry, news articles, parliamentary budgets, and much more. Of particular interest are four folding maps affixed to the back, each by Thomas Kitchin and focusing on contemporary conflicts around the globe; An Accurate Map of the Seat of War in the Kingdom of Prussia; A New Map of the Seat of War on the Coast of Malabar & Coromandel in the Empire of the Great Mogol; A New Map and and Correct Chart of the Seat of War on the Coasts of France, Spain, Portugal, and Italy, with the adjacent Coasts & Islands in the Ocean and Mediterranean Sea; and A New Map of the British Dominions in North America. This last is notable for showing Britain’s significant acquisitions east of the Mississippi River following the French and Indian War.

This is the fifth edition of the 1763 Annual Register, published in London by James Dodsley in 1782, amid another period of territorial transition. Public interest in the Americas would have been high, necessitating another printing (the fourth was in 1776). The publication of the Annual Register began in 1758 with brothers James and Robert Dodsley, with editing by Edmund Burke. It continues to be issued today.
