Description
This idyllic scene was published in William Cullen Bryant’s Picturesque America by D. Appleton & Company in New York around 1874. It’s based on artwork originally created by the talented Alfred Waud (the artist’s signature is faintly visible in the lower left).
The view shows the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, while looking east, with the Court House and City Hall clearly visible on the left. Numerous church spires, grain elevators, and smokestacks dot the skyline, with Lake Michigan faintly discernable in the background.
