Description
Tom Sawyer’s Island, part of Anaheim, California’s Disneyland, first opened in 1956 during the park’s second year of operation. Based on the iconic character from Mark Twain, the area was accessible by raft or riverboat and remained unchanged for decades.
In 2008, Disney rebranded the amusement as the “Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer’s Island” in order to promote the new film series Pirates of the Caribbean. This promotional pamphlet was distributed that same year and shows many of the themed updates.
“I Bet there’s been pirates on this island before, boys. We’ll explore it again. They’ve hid treasures here somewhere. How’d you feel to light on a rotten chest full of gold and silver…hey?” – Tom Sawyer, the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
