Description
Established in 1887 on New Zealand’s North Island, Tongariro National Park is the sixth oldest place on the planet to earn such a designation. It holds many sacred sites for the indigenous Māori people and includes scenic vistas, waterfalls, and glaciers.
This map was issued by the Automobile Association of Auckland in 1947 to promote automobile tourism throughout the park. Similar trends were taking place in the United States during the same period. The helpful guide presents motor roads, walking tracks, and mountain routes; with numerous annotations providing additional useful information. An inset of the winter sports area between The Chateau and Ruapehu can be seen in the upper right, while the verso contains trail guides and a list of local sights.
