Description
This eye-catching bird’s eye view is centered on the coastal town of Avalon, the only incorporated city on the island of Santa Catalina. Located about 30 miles southwest of Long Beach, the island has been home to indigenous tribes, Russian fur traders, Spanish missionaries, and American movie studios over its long history. Today, (and around the time this map was made), it’s a popular tourist attraction and wildlife preserve.
The image is centered on the approach to Avalon’s harbor, with the rugged mountains sloping into the surrounding valley. Vignettes highlighting the area’s history, recreation, culture, and wildlife comprise the attractive border. An Avalon business directory, plus a map of the entire island, can be found on the verso.
