This detailed map of Berwyn, Illinois provides a fascinating snapshot of the suburb about 10 miles southwest of Chicago in the midst of WWII. Buildings are individually outlined, roads are shown according to their surface composition (further info lower right), and geographic information is transmitted via pictorial elements and contoured topography.

Locations of interest within the image include both the I&M and Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canals, a long stretch of Route 66, several large quarries, the Clearing Industrial District, and Riverside – a planned community designed by Frederic Law Olmsted.

The map was published by the United States Geological Survey under the authority of Associate Topographic Engineer O.H. Nelson; originally in 1928 and corrected to reflect updates as of 1945.
