Description
Though it had been administered by the United States Army since it’s acquisition from Russia in 1867, Alaska remained a relative backwater until prospecting miners found gold in the Yukon Region in 1896. News reached the West Coast the following year, and the Alaska Gold Rush was on.
The United States government (and military) recognized the need for accurate mapping of the region, and sent several reconnaissance surveys into the territory. This volume, issued by the United States Geological Survey in 1900, extensively details the result of five such expeditions; George Eldridge in the Sushitna Basin, Joseph Spurr in southwestern Alaska, Walter Mendenhall from Resurrection Bay to Tanana River, Frank Schrader in Prince William Sound and the Copper River district, and Alfred Brooks in the White and Tanana river basins.
Each report is supplemented with the extensive use of maps, diagrams, geologic charts, illustrated views and photographs. Several folding maps are included in a back pocket (see scans).

Condition Description: Volume VII of the multi-volume annual USGS report to the Secretary of the Interior. 509 pp. bound in original gilt embossed boards. Spine is cracked and the front cover has completely separated, resulting in several loose pages at the front. Contains numerous folding maps, charts, photographs, diagrams, and geologic outlines in addition to the dense text component. Includes five fold out maps in the back cover. A few of the sheets show toning along fold lines, but otherwise are in good condition. Old rubberstamps for the Perthshire Society for Natural Science are scattered throughout the entire volume.
