Description

The Battle of the Chernaya was fought on August 16, 1855 by Russian forces against an Allied coalition of French, Ottoman, and Sardinian troops as a way to lift the ongoing siege against Sevastopol. The Russians failed to win the field, and Sevastopol was forced to surrender the following month.

This print showing a scene from the battle is based on a sketch by the French artist Gustave Dore and was published in the September 23, 1855 issue of The Illustrated London News.
