Description
Despite their historical enmity, France and Britain teamed up with the Ottoman Empire in order to thwart Russian imperial ambitions in the mid-19th century. The resulting conflict, known as the Crimean War, took place between 1853 and 1856, and the Siege of Sevastopol (1854-55) was one of its largest ground operations.
Upon attaining the city after the final assault in September, the Allied forces were all but assured a general victory in the war. This song, published in the Illustrated London News just a few days after Sevastopol’s fall, anticipates the ultimate result.
