Description
Covering the area approximately between the French city of Lyon and the Swiss city of Geneva, this antique copperplate engraved map presents the French province of Bresse in attractive detail. Geographic features such as forests, hills, and the region’s numerous lakes are depicted pictorially, while major towns and cities are highlighted in red ink.
There are two decorative cartouches. One, lower right, contains the title and is flanked by two female figures personifying the region’s agricultural output (including grapes), with an incomplete coat of arms immediately above. The second cartouche, lower center, contains the distance scale and shows a figure and several cherubs with surveying equipment.
Published by the Blaeu family around 1650, with French text on verso.
