Description

This city plan of New Albany, Indiana was originally published locally in 1940 by the Petery Hedder Printing Company. The simple street grid labels primary transportation routes, parks, cemeteries, and a handful of geographic features (including the adjacent Ohio River).

This particular copy was customized for use in the Central Engineering Department of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and has been dissected and mounted on linen for preservation and convenient storage. Bright color has been applied by hand to denote property and track ownership throughout the city.

A custom legend has been added adjacent to the title to identify the five primary local railroad operators. Of particular interest is the Kentucky & Indiana Terminal Railway, the predecessor of which was organized to construct a wagon bridge over the Ohio. Organized as a successor in 1910, the K. & I.T. facilitated passenger and freight transportation into nearby Louisville over a bridge that still stands today.
