This detailed, though somewhat illegible, pocket map of Europe’s Western Front during World War I was engraved by brothers William and Alexander Keith Johnston and published by A.J. Nystrom & Company of Chicago. Based on the combatant strength listed at the bottom of the sheet, it was probably issued in early 1917, shortly after U.S. entry into the conflict.
The image show various transportation routes and settlements across northeastern France (yellow), Belgium (green), the Netherlands and Luxembourg (pink) and western Germany (orange). Old battlefields are noted with cross swords,but there is a surprising lack of contemporary war information presented on the ‘New War Zone Map’.
