Prior to the construction (and completion) and the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges, the only option to cross the waters of San Francisco Bay was via ferry. This colorful map post card was published in the early 1920’s to promote the line of the Monticello Steamship Company.

The direct route between the Ferry Building and Vallejo (near Napa Valley) is shown with a hashed line – the solid line is used to indicate primary highways connecting to San Jose and Sacramento. Drawn by Richard Keller and published in Chicago by Curt Teich & Company.
