It is likely that United Airlines commissioned Ruth Taylor White to illustrate this following the success of her children’s book publication “Our U.S.A. A Gay Geography” (first published 1935).

Turning the booklet’s pages you follow the route of United’s Main Line Airway and its tributaries from the west to the east coast with colorful map with pictographs of activities, industries, landmarks and important events on the upper part of each page and text information beneath it. The last line of the booklet is an invitation to “retain this ‘Gay Geography’ as a souvenir of your flight.”
