Tidewater Virginia – “The Western Mediterranean” and Mother of Virginia.

This promotional map of eastern Virginia was published by the American Automobile Association (AAA) in 1948 to promote motor tourism along U.S. 17. Text on the verso bills the highway as ‘the most direct route linking Washington & Fredericksburg with Virginia’s beaches and seaports and then becoming “The Ocean Highway” to Florida.’

The map shows the route highlighted in red, with an accompanying mileage table, photographs, and a list of points of interest along the way. The verso shows the highway’s northern extension to New York and southern extension along the Atlantic coast into Florida. A simple map of historic Yorktown, Virginia is also included on the verso.
