Description
This attractive map presents a detailed snapshot of the United States about ten years after the end of the Civil War. States and territories are outlined in red ink, probably applied by hand shortly after printing. An interesting variety of settlements, geographic features, fortifications, and natural resources are labeled throughout the image.
Topography is depicted in hachure and numerous mountain peaks are named along with their corresponding elevation. Railroads are confined mostly to east of the Mississippi, but their advance across the Great Plains is evident. Lines under construction are also identified, including the Northern Pacific.
