Description

This interesting little strip map was published in Sumter, South Carolina by the Osteen Publishing Company in 1937 on behalf of the Lafayette Highway Association. The organization represented various businesses, chambers of commerce, and other organizations in towns along the promoted route between Bangor, Maine, and Miami, Florida.

According to the verso, “it is possible to give you this map free because of the voluntary contributions by the hotels, restaurants, filling stations, tourist homes, garages, and other interested citizens..”

The map conveniently folds into three segments for easy storage in a glove compartment or console and distances between points are also provided in several circumstances. The verso presents a more detailed distance charge for cities along U.S. Highway 1, U.S. Highway 15A, and U.S. Highway 17 – the combination of which provides ‘The Short Highway’ from northeast to southeast.
