Description

This map of Massachusetts shows the location of early homes that were constructed in the state during the 17th and 18th centuries. Dozens of individual homes are depicted, primarily along the coast, and list such prominent owners as Paul Revere, Rufus Putnam and John Cabot. Additional historical information is provided by text boxes within the image, and by the illustrated scenes that comprise the border.

There is also a “fancy cartouche which gives some idea of the hand labor on houses of the time” (according to the title block). Detailed descriptions of the houses are available on the verso, along their accessibility to local transportation routes. The map was drawn by Raymond Lufkin in 1930 and included as a supplement to House Beautiful, published in honor of the Tercentenary Celebration of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
