Description

This awesome image was published in New York by C.S. Hammond & Co., like in conjunction with the 1960 Summer Olympics held in Rome. The primary image shows a simple world map on Mercator’s projection with landmass colored according to participation in the games. Non-participants are not even worth labeling, at least in the eyes of the author!

Small icons commemorate the location of each of the ‘modern’ Olympics that began in Greece in 1896. Surrounding the map are numerous illustrations of some of the most popular events in both the summer and winter games.

The verso features a complete roster of Olympic Champions between 1896 and 1956, broken down by event. Steady athletic improvements visible in the first half of the 20th century would be exceeded exponentially by athletes of the second half and in the 21st century.
