This beautiful map of New Mexico presents a wonderful pictorial overview of ‘The Land of Enchantment’. Attractive vignettes illustrate a variety of places ranging from some of the earliest indigenous settlements (Aztec ruins) to more modern recreational opportunities like swimming, fishing, and skiing. Several National Parks and Monuments and labeled and include Gran Quivira, White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns, and the Gila Cliff Dwellings.

Figures from all eras are represented, providing a ‘cosmopolitan’ snapshot of the historic Southwest. Native Americans, Spanish conquistadors, prospectors, and cowboys straight from the Wild West – all are included within the image and surrounded by a border of flora, fauna, and indigenous symbols.

The map was created by Wilfred Stedman (artist’s signature lower right) and published in Sante Fe in 1941 by the New Mexico State Tourist Bureau.
