Description

This detailed map of the United States and the southern portions of Canada was published in 1876 by J.W. Goodspeed – seven years after the Golden Spike was driven near Promontory Point, Utah, marking the link between the two lines of the First Transcontinental Railroad. This route can be seen running from east to west near the center of the page, one among many that comprised the booming network of railways spreading across America.

Little distinction is given between those that are completed and proposed (shown with hashes), giving the audience a false impression of the transportation density available at the time. Place names are concentrated along the various routes depicted.

Elsewhere across the image, notable locations of interest are labeled, including forts, geographic features, and Public Lands east of the Indian Territory. Topography is depicted in hachure and a decorative vignette immediately below the title alludes to the agricultural and industrial bounty of the Reconstruction-era United States.
