Description

This lovely view of northeastern Virginia focuses on an approximately 25-mile stretch of the Potomac River between Occoquan Bay in the south and Roosevelt Island in the north. Emphasis is given to the region’s rich history, especially in relation to the American Revolutionary War and George Washington’s home at Mount Vernon.

Numerous vignettes highlight important buildings, often accompanied by captions describing their relevance. Notable events are also labeled, ranging from John Smith’s initial exploration in 1608 to the 1932 construction of the Mount Vernon Memorial Highway. A legend in the lower right identifies the symbols used throughout the image and provides a brief chronology of Mt. Vernon’s history.
