Description

This vibrant pictorial map of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, presents a colored update to the original black & white version issued by S. Ashburton Tripp circa 1955. Presumably, this is a limited edition that was colored by the artist whose signature appears along the bottom of the page. Illustrated vignettes highlight the area’s rich maritime history and lush outdoor scenery.

The border inscription reads, “We stood awhile like men ravished at the beautie and delicacie of the sweet soile; for besides rivers clear lakes of fresh water we saw meadows very large and hedged with stately groves – There was such an incredible store of vines we could not go for treading on them.’ The Voyage of Bartholomew Gosnold – 1602.”
