This promotional map of California (and some of Nevada) was designed to lure weather weary Easterners to the state with comparative information regarding the climate of the two regions. Average winter temperatures are color coded and given in a range of 30-72 degrees Fahrenheit, conveniently using the weather information collected by the Southern Pacific itself. Much of the image within the state is blank, with the exception of locations along the tracks of the railroad. Self promotion at its finest! The upper right hand corner of the map is dominated by an index that lists various towns, islands, resorts, rivers, and other features of the state. A county population table is embedded within the index, using statistics taken from the 1900 census. The map is completed by two small inset charts in the lower left – one listing and illustrating the winter temperatures across lines of similar latitude, the other showing California’s vast size by superimposing the land area of nine other states within its borders. On the verso of the map (originally designed to be folded) can be found letterpress information on agriculture, industry, education and climate.
