Nevada and California during a period of tremendous growth and development

This interesting and informational map of California and Nevada was originally published in an atlas by Jones & Hamilton around 1875. Vibrant original color, applied by hand using a stencil, distinguishes the county outlines across each state, themselves defined by heavy red outlines.

Railroads feature prominently throughout the image, though there is an evident dearth in Nevada when compared to its neighbor. Wagon roads are also shown and a few are labeled, including the U.S. Mail Route and the road from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City.

Toponyms identify a fascinating variety of locations of interest (towns, forts, Native American villages, etc.) while annotations provide additional information on local natural resources (notably gold), geographic features, and elevation data.
