Description

This interesting hand-colored map covers a broad region in northern Italy and Switzerland that formerly approximated to the territory of the Duchy of Milan. Established in the late 14th century, the Italian state would become one of the most wealthy and influential polities across southern Europe during the Renaissance period, thanks in large part to the silk trade.

The image captures the region at a later period, in a state of decline and under the authority of the Spanish Hapsburgs. Just a few years after publication, the duchy was passed to the Austrian Hapsburgs during the War of Spanish Succession.

Published in Paris by Nicholas De Fer in 1705.
