Description

This wonderful pamphlet was issued in 1928 by the Southern Pacific Railway to promote tourism along its line in operation throughout Texas and Louisiana. An introduction by Garnault Agassiz labels the region as “The New Empire of the Great Outdoors.” The hunter and fisherman were specifically targeted, and the first several pages of the publication are dedicated to informing the reader on the abundant fish and game available.

From the elusive snipe to the dangerous alligator, animals of all shapes and sizes are described in great detail, along with their respective seasons and hunting limits (25 doves per day, for example). Fishing is also well covered, with numerous paragraphs covering tarpon, deep-sea, freshwater, and other types.

The second half of the booklet is dedicated to regional descriptions of various areas served by the Southern Pacific Lines, each with a small map outlining local geography and transportation routes.
