This map was drawn by J. Aspin for inclusion in Lavoisone’s Genealogical, Historical, Chronological & Geographical Atlas, and like 20th century atlases, the author included a vast body of descriptive text to accompany the map. Information on the history, culture, climate, industry, and geographic features borders the entire image, and provides detailed background on the contemporary perspective of the great continent at the time of publication.

Hand color separates various political regions at the cusp of intense European exploration and colonization, including the Cape Colony, Monomotapa, and a gigantic Ethiopia. Geographical details are relatively sparse, but even several of those that were included would ultimately end up incorrect, such as the origin of the Nile residing in two lakes near the Mountains of the Moon.
