Description

This simple transportation map of southern California was issued on behalf of attendees to the 1984 Summer Olympic Games, held in Los Angeles. Freeways are numbered and labeled, with distances between points noted. Points of interest like Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and Griffith Park are also located within the image. Icons identifying various Olympic events are situated approximate to their host site, with individual inset maps on the verso providing street level detail on the immediate vicinity of each.

The map was published in San Jose by the H.M. Gousha Company in 1983. Manufactured under license from the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee.

The games were a financial success, bringing profits in excess of $250 million, despite the absence of fourteen Eastern Bloc countries who boycotted the games in response of the American led boycott in 1980. The abstention opened the opportunity for Romania, the only country within the Soviet sphere to attend the games, to win the second most gold medals after the U.S.
