Description

This haunting image simply captures the essence of the destruction endured across Europe during World War II, as well as the spirit of various cavalry units that contributed to ultimate victory. A ghostly warrior on horseback is flanked by silhouettes of the M5 Stuart light tank and the M8 Greyhound armored car; two of the vehicles heavily used during the war by ‘modern’ cavalry for mechanized reconnaissance.

The commendation is intended especially for members of the 4th Cavalry Group. It’s members participated in the European theater from D-Day (members of the unit were literally the first on the beach) through the occupation of Germany. A letter of praise to the CO of the 4th, Colonel John Macdonald, is reproduced in full, along with a second letter from Col. Macdonald to his troops.

This particular example is hand-addressed to Corporal Robert C. Koerning. The bottom of the sheet presents a somber epitaph for lost comrades – “To those who have fallen, we the living, extend this commendation. We remember.”
