This iconic chromolithographed pictorial map of Chicago, Illinois was created by artists Charles Turzak and Henry Chapman and published in 1931 by the Houghton-Mifflin Company. The vibrant colors and busting activity presented in an art-deco style provides a visual counterpoint to the city’s woes during the Great Depression (ongoing at the time).

The map is a wonderful representation of self-identity at a critical period in the city’s history. The image presents a bird’s eye view of Chicago and the surrounding area as it prepares for the upcoming 1933 Century of Progress, organized to celebrate the city’s phenomenal growth in the preceding 100 years. A stylized depiction of the fairgrounds can be seen along Lake Michigan in the foreground, while the background fades into the horizon; giving the impression of an immense connected metropolis that stretches as far as the eye can see.

The city is depicted in a stylized format using color to distinguish between urban settlement, the park and boulevard system, and the financial district known as the Loop. Several major attractions and points of interest are illustrated individually, generally accompanied by sometimes humorous captions. Cartoon figures are also shown engaging in a variety of activities that highlight Chicago’s recreational, cultural, and commercial opportunities. Prohibition, still in effect at the time of publication, is referenced throughout the image.
