Description

This beautiful map shows a large area along the Mississippi River between St. Louis and Memphis. The vibrant colors and attractive patterns contradict the image’s destructive content.

Each yellow dot pinpoints the location of an earthquake recorded between 1974 and 1991. The heavy concentration in southeastern Missouri/western Tennessee reflects the approximate boundaries of the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

Published by the U.S. Department of the Interior and U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, VA in 1993. Earthquake data recorded by St. Louis University and Memphis State University. Landsat image from the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan.
