Description

This lovely map was published in Paris by Pierre DuVal in 1654 and shows the geographical extent of the diocese of Evreux in the Normandy region of France. The titular city, capital of the department of Eure, and its coat of arms are featured prominently in the center; with numerous villages, parishes, abbeys, chateaus and priories labeled according to the legend in the lower right.

Forests and gardens are also shown pictorially. The upper right corner features a large dedicatory cartouche to Gilles Boutault, the bishop of Evreux at the time of publication and a staunch supporter of Counter-Reformation efforts in mid-17th century France. Symbols of the ecclesiastical struggle, including a sword, crosier (bishop’s staff), and a heavily ornamented mitre.
