Description

This eye catching map covers a broad area east of Vienna, including portions of modern day Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Poland and the Ukraine. Geographic features like mountains, hills, and rivers are depicted pictorially, while a confusing array of place names identify towns, regions, fortifications, and more. Several battle sites are noted with swords and highlighted in yellow, as explained in the key in the upper left.

It’s a bit of a surprise there are not more, because the region had long been a battleground for conflict between the Christian and Ottoman empires. If you look closely at the major urban centers, small flags with an ‘X’ or a crescent indicate the respective contemporary political sovereign. Vast portions of Hungary were under Ottoman rule until the end of the Great Turkish War in 1699.

The map was published in Paris by Pierre du Val in 1676, and includes a lovely title and dedicatory cartouche in the lower right.
