Description

This incredibly detailed survey of the Atlantic coastline around the city of Boston was originally issued by the United States Coast & Geodetic Survey in 1867. The iteration seen here was published over 40 year later – in 1910 – under the direction of Superintendent O.H. Tittmann.

The image includes the region between Nahant and Cohasset, with minute streets, topographical contours, and even building outlines in the interior. Depth soundings are scattered across the coast and two compasses are included to assist with determining magnetic delineation. Tables and descriptions in the lower right provide further information on lights, tides, buoys, elevations, and abbreviations used to determine the composition of the seafloor.

Further information on the harbor is available on the verso, plus an advertisement for the Boston Varnish Company and the Merchant Marine Manual.
