Description

This uncommon commemorative volume was authored and published by Harvey L. Watkins, private secretary of James A. Bailey before becoming General Manager and Press Agent of Barnum & Bailey’s Circus. Watkins attended the circus’s epic four-year European tour between 1897 and 1901 and penned this authoritative account a few years afterward, probably around 1906 based on text on the first page.

Its 105 pages, plus dozens of photographs and portraits, provide a descriptive overview of ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’ as it made its way from London to Paris to Vienna, where an audience was received by Emperor Franz Joseph. Readers can retrace the steps taken by the circus as it performed in front of millions of adoring fans across the continent.

Images of employees and attractions (including Side Show performers), venues, and more provide fascinating visual elements. Also included are fold-out maps, each showing the route of a particular season and accompanied by a calendar and index of stops.
