This large promotional map depicts the region of French West Africa, the formal name of the French controlled region encompassing the modern countries of Niger, Guinea, Mauritania, Senegal, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, and others. French territory is shown with a pink background, while other colonial possessions or independent nations (only Liberia, at time of publication) are left white. Illustrations of major cities, agricultural products, natural resources and exotic animals are on display, along with an inset showing French possessions relative to the entire continent. Published for the French Overseas Ministry (formerly the French Colonial Ministry), this map is designed to promote tourism and commercial development in French West Africa, which continued to operate as a political federation until 1960. It was at that time, a few years after the founding of the Fifth Republic, that France allowed governed territories to adjust their constitutions unilaterally and a wave of independence movements (started by Guinea) swept across the region.
