This map, showing the area from the Horn of Africa to Southern Egypt and the Niger River, is replete with interesting annotations, topographical details, and place names. Information on emerald, gold and iron mines, the ivory trade, Islamic warriors and dangerous thieves reflect the economic priorities that Europeans felt toward Africa at the time. Notes on the course of the Niger River and the Nile also show the difficulties cartographers would face when trying to interpret conflicting reports from explorers, sailors, and merchants. A hectic mishmash of towns, kingdoms and regions underlies the confusion felt toward the shifting tribal structure, as the English author attempted to organize the area into more distinctive political units.
