Description
This magnificent combination of map, illustrations, and photographs provides a fascinating snapshot of the WWII experiences of the 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment. The central image is a map of the European Theater that shows the route of the unit across the Mediterranean Sea, up through Italy, and across France into Germany.
Cartoon vignettes add a somewhat humorous element to the serious subject matter, while the insignia of the various units to which the regiment was attached are also shown in vibrant color. Twenty-one separate photographs are shown comprising the border, each representing a different drop identified by the legend on either side.
Created anonymously and likely reproduced by an engineering unit shortly after V-E Day in 1945. The map is quite rare and I’ve been unable to find any records in WorldCat, auction records, or known WWII collector’s libraries.
